
Hovhannes Karapetyan
BASS-BARITONE
The Armenian bass-baritone Hovhannes Karapetyan is a member of the ensemble at the Wiesbaden State Theatre, where his recent and upcoming projects include Kuno in Der Freischütz, Baron Douphol in La traviata, Mamma Agata in Viva la mamma, Raterefreund in Die Vögel, Dr. Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, the Black Minister in Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Raphael/Adam in Haydn’s Die Schöpfung.
He began his vocal studies at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan, where he appeared as Leporello in Don Giovanni and in the title role of Don Pasquale, before moving to London for advanced training at the Royal Academy of Music. His performances there included Argenio in Handel’s Imeneo, Interrogator 1 in the world premiere of Freya Waley-Cohen’s WITCH, Father Trulove in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, and Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.
Equally active in concert repertoire, Karapetyan has sung Bach’s Coffee Cantata, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C minor, and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung.
A prizewinner at numerous international competitions, he has received the Pavarotti Prize in London, First Prize at the Lusine Zakaryan Competition, Second Prize at the Nodar Andguladze Competition in Tbilisi, and special prizes at the Tatevik Sazandaryan Voice Competition and the Cascais Opera Competition. In 2023 he was a semifinalist at Operalia.
He has also participated in the Salzburg Festival’s Young Singers Project (2023) and continued his development as an emerging artist at the Mascarade Opera Studio in Florence during the 2023/24 season.
